Council's Data Recovery Capability Called Into Question
As the long-running general election campaign finally comes to an end, a disaster recovery specialist has voiced concerns over council's' disaster recovery (DR) preparedness in safeguarding electoral data, IT Pro reported this week.
Almost half - 40% - of councils in London have admitted to not testing their DR procedures that surround the data at this critical time.
The news came to light following Freedom of Information (FoI) requests sent to 32 councils. Of the council's questioned, three failed to respond and two refused to answer, both claiming the questions were outside FoI requirements.
However, 13 of the council's obliged the backup provider, admitting that they haven't tested their disaster recovery capabilities in the past year.
Councils' recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) - which concern the restoration of data following a failure - were also called into question.
While most of the councils said they could retrieve data in 24 hours, others said it would take up to a week, while one said the process could take around a fortnight.
