As a data recovery lab R3 see all sorts of storage devices for recovery because they are not recoverable by using a docking bay or software.
In other words drives affected by power, environment or physical interference needing our skilled engineers and the resources of a data recovery lab.
Of the last 10,000 recoveries requiring engineering level recovery the average age of the HDD was 4 years old. Ranging from a few days old - which had been dropped – to a 22 year old continuous use drive which had multiple power outages.
The average age for an SSD coming in for recovery is 1 year old, ranging from 1 month as result of a spike to a 6 year drive which suffered a controller failure, but most come in appearing to be accessible but taking hours and even weeks to transfer files.
SSD in MacBooks and iMac as well as high-end HP and Dell AlienWare’s are what we see most but there is also an increase in Server RAID failures using SSD.
The issue with SSD is it has a higher risk of corruption and slower recovery times. A recent 1TB Sandisk took 25 days to recover, this was just the difference in read speed of an SSD in a failed state. Most of the recovered data had some irreversible corruption to the files that could not be corrected.
As a company running over 100 computer systems and servers plus over 500 x 1TB to 8TB drives used on fortnightly rotation as part of our imaging and recovery process, we would be the first to adopt SSD if it was faster, cheaper and would improve efficiency.

My RAID 5 server got severely corrupted by windows checkdisk.
R3 data recovery did their best to recover the data and got a lot of files back for me - but a lot was also lost. I doubt anyone else would have managed to do more so better than I feared (rather than better than expected).
R3 are very organised and efficient and provide pretty much 24/7 support. They will show you exactly what they can recover before you have to pay up. Data returned on a USB drive with the original drive delivered back to you in "as received" condition - all included in the "more than I'd hoped but less than I'd feared" cost.
My advice if you have a drive crash is touch nothing and get it to R3; then stand back and let them do the job.. They are totally trustworthy and you won't be ripped off.
