What Professional USB Data Recovery Services Include

USB data recovery retrieves files from USB flash drives affected by logical corruption, firmware faults, or physical damage. All work is carried out by trained engineers using controlled laboratory procedures.

  • USB Data Recovery for Logical and Physical Failures

Engineers recover data from accidentally formatted USB sticks, corrupted file systems, firmware faults, and electrically inactive devices by creating forensic images of the memory rather than working on the original media.

  • Component-Level Recovery for Physically Damaged USB Sticks

When connectors, casings, or controllers fail, engineers dismantle the device and access the internal NAND memory chip directly. Raw data is extracted using dedicated chip readers and reconstructed offline.

  • Secure Handling and Verified Output

Each USB data recovery case follows documented confidentiality procedures. Recovered files are checked for structure and usability before return.

  • Support for Common File Systems and Operating Systems

USB data recovery covers FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS Plus, and APFS media used with Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

  • No Data, No Fee Policy

Fees apply only when recoverable data is confirmed and approved for return.

When USB Data Recovery Requires Professional or Lab-Based Intervention

USB data recovery is a core service at R3 Data Recovery. Each device undergoes an initial assessment to identify whether the failure is logical, firmware-related, or physical.

Engineers examine the USB stick at controller, memory, and file system level. This prevents the use of generic software that can overwrite recoverable data or worsen existing damage.

All recovery work is performed on images of the memory, not on live devices. This approach preserves original data and allows controlled reconstruction of files. Where recovery is not technically possible, this is explained clearly following assessment.

Clients receive written findings, clear pricing, and confirmation before any chargeable work begins.

USB and Flash Drive Symptoms That Mean You Should Stop Using DIY Recovery Tools

USB data recovery is required when a flash drive no longer provides reliable access to stored files. Common indicators include:

  • USB Stick Not Recognised by Any Computer

The device does not appear on Windows or macOS systems. This often indicates controller failure or electrical damage.

  • System Requests to Format the USB

The operating system detects the device but reports that it must be formatted. Formatting can overwrite recoverable data.

  • Files Missing or Showing Zero Bytes

File names appear but contents cannot be opened. This is commonly caused by file system corruption or memory errors.

  • Physically Bent or Broken USB Stick

A cracked casing or loose connector can cause short circuits if powered. Further use risks permanent loss.

  • USB Stick Overheats or Disconnects Repeatedly

Electrical instability or firmware faults interrupt access and can damage memory cells.

Recognized any of these signs?

Stop using the device immediately to prevent overwriting recoverable data.

USB and Flash Drive Brands, Controllers, and Memory Types We Can Recover

USB data recovery is available for most manufacturers, including:

  • SanDisk
  • Kingston
  • Samsung
  • Corsair
  • PNY
  • Transcend
  • HP
  • Toshiba (Kioxia)
  • Patriot
  • Verbatim

Brand and model do not affect confidentiality or assessment procedures.

Our recovery approach is based on the device's internal failure mode, not its label.

How USB Data Recovery Works: From Diagnosis to Final Verification

USB data recovery follows a defined process designed to protect data integrity.

  1. 1

    Free Evaluation

The USB stick is received by post or courier and logged for assessment. Engineers test the controller, memory, and file system to identify the failure mode.

  2. 2

    Data Extraction

Memory is imaged using specialised equipment. Chip-off extraction is used when normal access is not possible.

  3. 3

    File Reconstruction and Checks

File systems are rebuilt and data is reviewed to confirm structure and readability.

  4. 4

    Secure Data Return

Recovered files are supplied on a new storage device or via an agreed secure method.

Detailed: cat-caused USB snap, DIY soldering failed

I made instant contact to R3 Data Recovery and they arranged for courier to collect, sent back to their hospital and realised it was a corrupted memory stick. Within three days the data was recovered once again, placed back on to another new memory stick and sent back to my address. All of the data was recovered once again and I was one very happy customer. I would certainly use R3 Data Recovery for any future data issues I might have and would definitely recommend to any one I know who might come across data issues.

    USB memory stick controller failure

I contacted one (nameless) data recovery company who examined the device and stated that there was no physical damage (which was obvious), but the flash memory was damaged beyond repair, and no data could be retrieved. As a final resort I sent the stick to R3 Data Recovery on a Friday afternoon. By 6 pm on the Saturday, an engineer emailed me a list of the files he was able to retrieve, including the critical one, and following settlement of the (in my opinion, reasonable) invoice, a new data stick was promptly returned to me with all my missing files. Many thanks to R3 Data Recovery !

Kingston 16GB USB, student's year of college work

My daughters memory stick broke with a year of college work on it, we had been to numerous shops and they could not fix it, our last option was R3 Data recovery, withing 24 hours they had got all her college work onto a software and sent it via email where she could see what they had recovered with a video of how to do this, Andy and the team was brilliant, service with a smile, my daughter can now continue to go onto college next year and finish her Level 3 heath and social care happy

USB and Flash Drive Recovery Questions About Risk, Timing, and Data Safety

Common questions about our USB data recovery services, process, and capabilities.

What Is USB Data Recovery?
USB data recovery retrieves files from USB flash drives that cannot be accessed through normal operating system tools.
How Does USB Data Recovery Work?
Engineers diagnose the fault, image the memory, and rebuild files from extracted data rather than modifying the original device.
Can You Recover Data From a Snapped USB Stick?
In many cases, yes. Recovery may be possible through component-level repair or direct memory extraction, depending on damage.
Can Data Be Recovered After Formatting?
Accidental formatting often leaves data intact until overwritten. Recovery may still be possible.
How Long Does USB Data Recovery Take?
Most cases complete within several working days after evaluation. Severe physical damage can require additional time.
Is USB Data Recovery Secure?
Yes. All cases follow documented confidentiality procedures and controlled handling.
