Glossary

Data recovery is the work of getting files back from a device that has failed, been damaged, or had its data deleted or corrupted.

The files can still be on the device after the computer has stopped opening them.

These pages define the words that come up when a disk, a memory card, or an array stops behaving. Each page stands on its own.

B

  • Bad sector

A bad sector is a small block on a disk that the device can no longer read or write reliably.

C

  • Clean room

A clean room is a workspace with filtered air, used when a hard disk drive has to be opened so dust does not settle on the platters.

D

  • Disk imaging

Disk imaging is making a sector-by-sector copy of a storage device so later work is done on the copy, not on the original.

H

  • Hard disk drive (HDD)

A hard disk drive (HDD) is a storage device that records data magnetically on spinning platters and reads it with heads that fly just above the surface.

  • Head crash

A head crash is physical contact between a hard disk drive's read/write heads and the magnetic platter surface.

P

  • Physical failure

A physical failure is damage to the storage hardware itself, such as the heads, the motor, the circuit board, or the platters.
