Emergency Recovery of a Failed RAID 5 Drive

The montage is an example of a drive which was part of a failed RAID 5 that came in for emergency data recovery Monday evening, driven up from Western Super Mare by the server administrator who wanted to personally correct the mistake made not checking the Backups which were 20 days behind.
First visiting Bristol Data Recovery and considering 2 other data recovery specialists in the Fields of Wales but then continuing on to Security House in Sheffield arriving at 7:30pm.
This member disk had failed before the COVID19 lockdown and was in a server room unattended other than remote access. Decision was made to run in degraded mode until a replacement was found.
This was forgotten, the extended pandemic affecting staff availability and travel.
Fortunately still a full recovery by the R3 team.
Client stayed in a local hotel overnight, whilst two of the drives were imaged and the other two were inspected. Initially we could not be sure that the most damaged was the first to fail but ultimately it was and a full recovery was possible from the other three once bad sectors had been read from them.
The recovered data was collected Tuesday afternoon and client was able to drive straight back to his offices. With up to date data.
